HVAC Success – Throwing Your Hat in the Ring

What holds so many of us back from reaching our full potential and the ultimate in HVAC Success? For most of us it is discipline, enthusiasm, focus and sometimes just lack of knowledge. When you look at all the reasons why we don’t achieve something it typically comes back to some form of lack of commitment.

There are different levels of commitment and normally people aren’t able to hit the deepest level, which I will refer to as “do or die” commitment. We make hundreds of commitments each day, yet most of them are so small we don’t even consciously recognize we are making them.

Our days are jam packed with fulfilling all the commitments we have made. A lot of people will run out of time in a day and just roll over the commitments they were unable to complete to the next day. This has caused each of us to operate under different levels of commitment and priority levels.

If you reflect back on your life, there are times when no matter what was going on around you, no matter how busy you were, you were so committed to something that everything else was pushed aside and you gave it your complete attention. Then there were other times when something was so important that it almost consumed you. This could be a positive or negative event. This is “do or die” commitment.

Nine times out of ten, when someone recalls a personal event or situation that was of the “do or die” nature, they don’t recall how everything actually came together to pull it off. The comments are often, “Things just kind of fell into place”. Has this ever happened to you?

In my life there have been many successes as well as many struggles. Regardless of the nature, when I reflect back on my biggest victories they were almost always a result of a Do or Die commitment level.

I’ll share a personal example to assist me with illustrating these life events that led to “do or die” commitment levels.

Example:

Being a very competitive person by nature my entire life, sometimes I find myself looking back on situations asking myself…”why?” This was the case in the fall of 2011. A group of my coworkers and I decided to meet up for happy hour one beautiful afternoon. As the afternoon turned into evening we were deep in conversation with some other patrons who were describing an event they had recently completed. The event sounded pretty cool at the time. The past competitors shared their stories with smiles and excitement.

I learned two things that night. First, alcohol impairs my judgment and second, I define “Cool” totally differently than a 22 year old who is in great shape. The event twelve of my coworkers and friends I committed to completing was “The Tough Mudder” and it was going to be in our town in 5 months.

As we researched the event and discovered it was a brutal obstacle course, covering 15 miles designed by the British Special Forces, oh and there are obstacles where someone thought it would be super fun to electrocute everyone who passed thru. Soon the feelings of excitement and elation began to vanish. Nobody wanted to be the one to back out of our “pack” so what did we do…..we registered for the event!

Once we were registered and committed to the event I began to have some BIG concerns. I hadn’t worked out in years, my diet was not that of an athlete, and I smoked almost two packs of cigarettes a day! I had to make a decision. Either I withdraw my registration and tell everyone I was quitting, or I make some changes in my life and do whatever was required to not only run in the event, but to beat everyone else on my team. For me the ballad of Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights kicked in: “If you’re not first, you’re last”.

Once I threw my hat into the ring and fully committed all the disciplines I had been lacking started to appear. I ate better, worked out whenever I could and I prepared my body for the upcoming task. As a result, I finished the competition in the front of the pack.

The day that we realize why” we always pull through, is the first day of the rest of your life! The answer to this question is one of the core differences between the most successful people I have observed, and the average person.

To dive into all the details as to how this occurs would require many more pages, so allow me to sum it up like this.

When you want something so badly that nothing will derail you from achieving the goal, you ALWAYS win and win big! You are emotionally engaged, almost obsessed…..you have unlimited energy, everything is easy….and oh yeah, YOU HAVE FUN!

So what is it that you want right now? The only thing holding you back is YOU! Focus on your goal. Obsess over your goal. Then COMMIT to your goal. Throw your hat in the ring.
